What is Castellvilar?

Castellvilar is a dream of intense and perfect aromas that is hidden in the fog, like the greatest of treasures, in the lap of a medieval castle. It is a secret pact between nature and man who respects it. 

The adaptation of coffee plants to a continental climate is a unique milestone in the world. And so they can only generate an unlikely coffee, a flavor that no one has ever tried before. A unique, exclusive and unrepeatable coffee.

BUT...HOW DO YOU MAKE A COFFEE PLANTATION THRIVE OUTSIDE THE TROPICAL CLIMATE?

It is certainly not simple. First, you need to have a vision and the firm intention to make it a reality. Then you have to study: the possibilities, the needs, the composition of different soils, the historical temperature and rainfall of the area, the secrets of the crops, the ability of the plants to collaborate... And you have to study it for years.

Nothing about months, years.

When you think you have enough knowledge, you have to double down, take a leap of faith and combine family, work and project in the right place to grow a coffee plant biologically prepared for a tropical climate.

But this place is not tropical,
and here lies the meaning of the bet.

Once you have the place, the time and the seeds, you have to check that all this will not be of any use a priori: that nature has wisdom and ancestral rhythms. The first year of germination and plant growth is lost. Also the second year and a half of the next germination, due to the inability of the social environment to cohere with the innovations. And here comes a gesture of humility: recognizing that the dream in question is far beyond one's own will and that one must start again.

But this is the key, when the majority would have given up, you have to persevere and evolve: the experience gained in all areas allows this. In addition, little by little, seeing that there is a pure soul behind this project, the plant begins to collaborate: it allies itself with man and begins to create a reality alongside him.

The plant is demanding and the man a devotee in its care. Water by hand just when needed. Check the temperature of the site every three hours, including nights. Observe, analyze, understand and act. The plants respond by giving him a real treasure: the much-desired flowers and fruits...

Who is behind this dream?

We are Joan and Eva, and one day we left everything to succeed in producing the only coffee in the world grown in a continental climate.

Joan Giraldez

Joan Giraldez is a Senior Technician in industrial mechanization and, very soon, he turned his knowledge and dedication to his passion: the world of coffee.

For 25 years he made notable contributions to the coffee industry, among which stand out the patents in 2001 for a new system for emulsifying and dissolving coffees and soluble products adapted to espresso coffee machines, later known as coffee capsules. The general management of one of the main national espresso coffee machine companies and the delivery of courses to companies and fairs throughout Europe.

Today, with the passion intact and an accumulated background, he has achieved an unimaginable milestone: growing coffee in a continental climate.

EVA PRAT

Eva Prat, coming from the rural world, trained as a Higher Technician in Accounting and Finance, practicing until today.

Joan's lifelong campaign, he is responsible for the financial and commercial management of the farm, undoubtedly sharing the passion for coffee and the dream of creating one unique in the world.

The time has come to share with you all that we have learned and all that we have achieved. We will do this through various activities (tastings, workshops, guided tours, talks...) about our passion: coffee.
